I know enough about the way a white people thinks to know that these people in their sarees and dhotis and kurtas would have totally freaked out most any man or woman living in the 1980s. Remember this was before the time of internet or even satellite television. Westerners had little chance to stumble on anything culturally Indian and get over that initial shock. It would have been no different for an Indian child born and raised in the US by Indian parents at that time. Even to them going to India for the first time would have been a culture shock. I bet everyone in those days were anticipating a mass suicide in one of the Hare Krishna compounds. Ted Patrick must have been saying to himself, 'any day now', 'its gonna happen, any day now.'
