We have bodily identification thats why we need some body to associate with. Indeed association of senior devotees is essential but those devotees need not be a diksha guru. Association with a diksha guru is on spiritual platform which is done through Vani. One must be sincere and Srilla prabhupada as a spiritual master takes charge of his spiritual lives and his spiritual education. A conditioned soul cannot perform the function of diksha or diksha guru.
If it was pre 1977 iskcon, These devotees would have left due to not being able to get a "personal" relationship from "living, breathing" body of Srilla prabhupada that more than 60% of early disciples never got.
